An entirely different beast from the book and concerned with different strands of the same issue, at its core. They’re both about destruction and mutation but where VanderMeer deals with this on a sociological and ecological level, all names and identities removed, Garland turns this into a quietly metafictional mediation on mutating and fluid self-identity.
