Pig ★★★★½

When Nicolas Cage works, he really works. His performance in this is the perfect blend of his early wunderkind era and his latter indie/straight-to-dvd schlock. (For the record, it’s only straight-to-dvd schlock in the subject matter, everything else about this movie feels like a perfect indie flick).

Beyond his performance and that of supporting actor Alex Wolff, I want to give a specific shoutout to the editing of this film. It is so briskly paced and knows exactly when to cut out before any scene starts to linger on for too long. The 1 1/2 hour runtime is crucial to pulling off a movie with such lowkey characters and stakes, so kudos to the filmmakers for recognizing where the strengths lie and how to accentuate them.
