Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace ★★

This is a film that should be filled with excitement, intrigue, entertainment, heart, soul, personality, adventure, and a sense of urgency - but has none of these things. How can a Star Wars film be so dull and soulless? There’s the blueprints of a great film here, but its execution is severely lacking. John Williams’ magnificent score is really what gives the film even an inkling of personality. And the lightsaber fight between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Darth Maul is legitimately great.

But despite all that, I can’t bring myself to say that this is bad. Just painfully mediocre.
