    this is a very easy movie to overstate the virtues of, particularly since they stand in such contrast to the mind numbing bullshit surrounding them; and yet, i find myself oddly charmed by how the moments raimi is let out of his cage to direct grind so visibly against the feige connective tissue, creating a tonal clash that, while i’m sure the folks who Rate Movies Objectively will be deeply irritated by, feels like the closest these fuckers have gotten to any remotely interesting territory the past 15 years. reminded me a lot of ghost rider: spirit of vengeance???? strange film lol

    obvious spurts of orientalism aside, i remain steadfast in my convictions that baz luhrmann is one of the only western filmmakers that pays capital B Bollywood genuine, non-ironic respect; even going past his sampling of chamma chamma (or amitabh himself in gatsby), i dare you to look at this and not see at least a little bit of overlap with the maximalism on display in 2000s fare from shankar or bhansali or kjo. after years of seeing corny and inauthentic homages to bollywood (sometimes even from filmmakers i otherwise like), the contrast couldn’t be clearer. so excited for elvis lmao
