The Master

The Master ★★★★

I have a few things to say and I'm not sure where to start. I'm not planning on a true review yet so let's make a list...

1. I need to rewatch this before I can truly give my thoughts, but I'll do what I can now.

2. I didn't really appreciate There Will Be Blood the first time I saw it, so I'm not worried about my uncertainty here. I'll give PTA some respect and hold my review at 4 stars while I really decide. And that's only because I'm spoiled and I was expecting the world with this movie.

3. It's a beautiful movie but maybe a little too pristine. Most shots are perfectly framed in the dead center, and it sort of gets old. I don't really remember how often TWBB did this, but I don't think it was as often. Maybe it was the new cinematographer(not sure it was a good move, but it did look great. The sets and the colors etc, really great).

4. Philip Seymour Hoffman is great, better than Joaquin I think. It's hard to tell after seeing it once, but I don't think this comes close to the greatness of TWBB. PSH + Joaquin is a great combo but Daniel Day Lewis' Daniel Plainview is still on another level. I LOVE Joaquin, but I'm not sure I loved his character here.

5. I'm not sure I can say much more without seeing it again, it's a fairly complex movie.

6. I'm pretty sure I'm not giving it enough credit. But in due time...
