    Horror x52 - 1990s

"Your death will be a tale to frighten children, to make lovers cling closer in their rapture. Come with me, and be immortal." - Candyman

We all know how the urban legend goes; turn the lights off, look in the mirror and say the name of the boogeyman 5 times and he'll appear. Whether you have seen this film or not almost every kid would have heard some variation of its plot. We all done it…

  • Burning

March around the world - South Korea

If you have any intention of watching this film the best way is to go in cold.

I was blown away... Burning is terrific, defying all expectations. Not for a while has a film left me speechless once the credits roll and that's what this film did.

Even while watching it's hard to pinpoint what is happening in Burning... in the best possible way. Starting as a charming love story then slowly turning…

" I've passed the point of no return, Beth. Do you know when that is? That's the point in a journey where it's longer to go back to the beginning than it is to continue to the end. "

Douglas is terrific in Falling Down as he conveys so much all at once - he's normal, funny, scary, intense, and psychotic in the space of seconds. He's a real figure for something worrying but also not unfathomable that is just…

" E-mail is for geeks and pedophiles."

As soon as Cruel Intentions kicks off with Placebo blaring over a sun-drenched American highway, you know you're in for an era-driven film and all its problems.

Mostly this was a fun over-the-top and darkly comic roar. The biggest problem being that it makes the irritating main character so irredeemable that by the time it comes for you to root, or at least sympathize with him, it's already a lost cause. Ryan Phillipe…

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

I’m becoming obsessed - I love the whole thing the fake movie scenes, chilling out in cars, the bromance, di caprio’s engaging melancholic character arc, Pitts purposefully problematic persona, Tate as the periphery of change, all the side characters (I take to a different one each time), the what if ending that defines a fairytale, the unease of knowing where that night really went, the marvellous use of the Rolling Stones Out Of Time etc etc... ok maybe there were too many feet but I can live.

I think this predictably divisive film is Tarantinos late career masterpiece.

    The Invitation

    Horror x52 - Female Director

Covered in a shroud of intense dread from the very beginning, intentions and motifs are not clear but you know something terrifyingly strange is going on. As we enter the setting (Not unlike the Sharon Tate, Manson murder setting - gives me chills just thinking about it) there is a slow and meditative build-up of claustrophobic paranoia... that keeps going and going, until you can almost take no more.

It is beautifully done from the…
