March around the world - South Korea

If you have any intention of watching this film the best way is to go in cold.

I was blown away... Burning is terrific, defying all expectations. Not for a while has a film left me speechless once the credits roll and that's what this film did.

Even while watching it's hard to pinpoint what is happening in Burning... in the best possible way. Starting as a charming love story then slowly turning…

    When Marnie Was There

March around the world - 14/30 - Japan

This effort from Studio Ghibli is simply stunning, everything about it. Animation doesn't need to be mentioned from this studio although it may be the best I've witnessed or at least to my preference I mean it's delicately stunning.

Marnie seems to be one of the studio's minor efforts. However, it is possibly my favourite so far. The emotional charge of the film came out of the blue. Dealing with friendship, loneliness,…

    High Tension

Have a huge soft spot for Switchblade Romance due to the fact it was one of the first proper gore films I watched while my tastes craved it and also because it takes me back to the time and place when I first watched it with mates. Simpler times or possibly just younger.

The muse interludes when the tension is racking up is still on point. Make what you will of the ending as a splatterfest it will always hold good memories.

  • Mirrors

Mirrors in films have provided some great jump scares, the film Mirrors does not. Aja's least gory film so far, although, there are a couple of bloody scenes. The premise is good then it gets out of hand with 3 or 4 false endings each one worse than the one before. Kiefer Sutherland's character is awful so having to follow him about makes it a little tough.

The sound design is good and there are a couple of chilling scenes but they are minor. It's a decent enough film until an overblown ending really destroys the goodwill.

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

I’m becoming obsessed - I love the whole thing the fake movie scenes, chilling out in cars, the bromance, di caprio’s engaging melancholic character arc, Pitts purposefully problematic persona, Tate as the periphery of change, all the side characters (I take to a different one each time), the what if ending that defines a fairytale, the unease of knowing where that night really went, the marvellous use of the Rolling Stones Out Of Time etc etc... ok maybe there were too many feet but I can live.

I think this predictably divisive film is Tarantinos late career masterpiece.

    Horror x52 - Female Director

Covered in a shroud of intense dread from the very beginning, intentions and motifs are not clear but you know something terrifyingly strange is going on. As we enter the setting (Not unlike the Sharon Tate, Manson murder setting - gives me chills just thinking about it) there is a slow and meditative build-up of claustrophobic paranoia... that keeps going and going, until you can almost take no more.

It is beautifully done from the…
