Death Note

Death Note ★★★½

Idk to me the positives outweigh the negatives on this. Don’t get me wrong there’s a lot of stupid shit, but there’s also a lot great stuff, that people often don’t mention. The Cinematography is gorgeous. The soundtrack filled with 80 synthwave tracks is great. Willem Dafoe is perfect as Ryuk. Mia is a way more interesting character than Misa from the original anime and Sarah Margaret Qualley who plays her is incredible in this. I‘m much more invested in her than this Americanized version of Light. It makes me wish that the movie was about her. Now that I just mentioned it, Nat Wolff and Lakeith Stanfield were really miscast in this. They are NOT bad actors. Goddamn it, Lakeith is probably one of the best up and coming actors. He‘s good in Straight Outta Compton and apparently great in the Tv-series Atlanta, but he really was the wrong choice for L. The problem with Nat‘s performance is that he overacts constantly in the film and it still seems like they try to portray him as this silent, but smart psychopath with a god complex like in the original. But the biggest problem of the film is the script, because they had to fill in way to many things into one film, therefore some scenes feel a bit rushed and move to fast.

All in all I have to admit, that I really like this film. It was clear from the beginning that the Death Note Stans wouldn’t like this. It changes a lot of stuff from the source material, but in my opinion that and Wingards (mostly) excellent direction, make this film worthwhile.
