I watched The Northman with a surprisingly packed theatre. I was excited for an Eggers movie and based on the large amounts of 25-year-old guys in wifebeaters, I think everyone else was excited for a viking blockbuster. I think it took a total of ten minutes for the movie to turn off everyone in the theatre but me. Three people in front of me were on their phones during Kidman's monologue, a couple of guys to my right started a full on conversation during a vision sequence, and most of the audience laughed at one of the most impactful scenes of the film. When I left the theatre I walked past four guys standing at the entrance and could clearly hear one of them say to his buddy "What the fuck was that shit?".

I was hoping to witness Eggers best work yet and I found it. The rest of the audience was hoping for another blockbuster that doesn't stray from the modern formula and they'll find that in three days. The Northman is everything you can hope for if you know what you're walking into.
