Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★★

For as much as I appreciate how confrontational and unapologetically antifascist this is, I'm probably not the best person to discuss the politics of this film; on a cinematic level, though, I feel completely qualified to gush about how incredibly well made this is. It's not hard to see where King draws his influences from - Z, The Conformist, and other 70s political dramas among the most obvious - but he brings them together in a way that never feels like pastiche, creating something that's as urgent and as fiery as its source material deserves. Kaluuya and Stanfield are fantastic, but that goes without saying; give the two a phone book and they'll make it riveting. Sets the bar so high for the rest of 2021 that it almost feels unfair.
