• Bluebeard

Bluebeard is a classic horror-film that had been on my watchlist for a long time and in hindsight I'm not really sure why. I was shocked to learn that it was released in 1944 because it feels so much older than that. An obtuse wall-to-wall score makes it feel particularly dated; combined with expressionist cinematography, stylized decor and stilted but overstated acting, it feels like a film that is transitioning straight out of the silent movie era.
    As a whole…

    Total Recall

It's quite clear that Verhoeven is a weaver of excess. Just like Robocop and Starship Troopers it is gloriously over-the-top and in constant full gear. Besides being inherently entertaining to watch, this film manages to be both a no holds barred Schwarzenegger vehicle and a fascinating scifi plot filled with clever satire. And that is an achievement.

  • Diary of a Country Priest

    Diary of a Country Priest

monday: JOURNAL D'UN CURÉ DE CAMPAGNE (1951)

Based on Georges Bernanos' novel, Diary of a Country Priest chronicles the life and struggles of a young priest entering the Ambricourt parish. Plagued by a persistent illness, he is forced to limit his diet to bread soaked in cheap wine. Already, the Eucharist symbols of the Catholic church are a prominent part of this man's life, and of the film. The priest is a man of deep…

  • The Good Son

    The Good Son

The premise sounds fairly promising, however the film perplexingly opts to develop the story as unambiguous as possible, giving any flimmer of tension or plot nothing to work with. This could have been a disturbing psychological thriller, but it plays out like a Home Alone version of The Omen.
The result is an unbriddled mess of 90's shlock, without a clear discernible tone that must have confused Elmer Bernstein just as much as it did the audience, because it has one of the worst film scores I have ever heard in my life.

  • The Adventures of Robin Hood

    The Adventures of Robin Hood

This film is one of those instances where everything just clicked perfectly into place. It is a technical achievement yet maintains an inherent sense of fun, the dialogue feels incredibly fresh, the characters are many but each of them is memorable, the intense swashbuckling and daring stunts give the film such a high energy, the vivid colors just ooze classic cinema... Just to think that apparently James Cagney was initially cast as Robin Hood, untill he walked off set and…

  • Splash

I'm so confused as to what the purpose of this film is aside from a surface level fetish-fantasy indulgence. It's like one of those films Kevin Smith would come up with stoned on his podcast and then actually make, not realizing that it's horrendous to watch for those 'not in on the joke'. The comedy in this was just bizarre, a couple of scenes made me scratch my head more than that time where I accidentally broke my ant-farm jar…

    In the Heights

Way too long but very entertaining. Had not that much going on in the first half, made up for it in the second. Performances were good, Jimmy Smiths was great. Liked the songs and the overall atmosphere.
This was the perfect choice for my first theatre experience in almost 2 years.
