I remember exactly the viewing experience I had with the first Avatar, I had my hopes up and was ultimately distracted by 3D elements and underwhelmed with the story that felt like a retread. In the more than a decade since that came out I have had a bit of a James Cameron renaissance, realizing that Terminator 2 is a perfect movie and one of my all-time favorites, as well as seeing Titanic for the first time and finding there…

I give myself a little annual challenge of revisiting the movies from five years ago to see how they hold up and to hunt down movies I missed the first time around. This year I finally finished up my 2017 watch list just about in time for the Oscars. The Big Sick is still a great comedy and the joke where the Ray Romano asks Kumail his thoughts on 9/11 is an all-timer.

The whole movie is made by the story of the girl that was in the room at touchdown and worked for NASA on the rover's last day.

A very enjoyable time capsule to late-'90's early-2000's Japanese movies and it's cinematic joy. The Departed is one of my favorite movies and this has a lot of the same beats but is just a bit off and shows how much Scorsese added to make his movie so incredible. Oddly, his passion project of Silence is much more of a bear for bear remake of the Japanese film that comes from than this.

This sets itself apart in the MI series of movies through its visual storytelling and the Hitchcock-like suspense mixed with a mini-Ocean’s 11-style heist factor. The cold open is one of the best in the series. Ving Rhames finally gets a shot at a little spot to shine by showing that he is a bit of the heart of the team, while simultaneously showing his character’s technical expertise. I’m glad this movie doesn’t fall into being a sloppy romantic triangle around Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. This could really find its way getting bumped up to five stars for just the love of movies.

You can’t have a Host without a Parasite. I tried really hard to come in to this movie cold and based on the name alone I figured it would be one of the Bong science fiction movies like The Host, Okja or Snowpiecer. I didn’t realize it would be one of his straight thrillers like Mother or Memories of a Murder until I was walking up to the ticket counter and heard an old man with his grandson giving him…
