Another Round

Another Round ★★★½

Kind of stuck between a 7 and an 8, decided to go with a high 7 even though I think the ending is probably the best of the year. It’s a fun, easy watch but I question if the film’s message isn’t a little destructive in a sense. Mads Mikkelsen was incredible once again but I thought a lot of the side characters were either forgettable or flat. Maybe the narrative tried to be to many things at once, because personally the buddy comedy aspect of it felt very weak, I think I would’ve like it more had it been more dramatic or more comedic, instead of sitting somewhere in the middle. To me, Another Round is one of those films that gets most of the fundamentals right, but personally doesn’t go really above and beyond anything else. Most of the classroom stuff was cheesy and the family side plots took a back seat when I think they should’ve been explored more thoroughly. The premise and idea itself is very interesting, I just think some tonal adjustments would’ve really helped it for me. So far I see a lot of 4/5s and 4.5/5s so I feel for this rushed review I have to be more negative to explain my score but I really did enjoy it, just not as much as others apparently.

7.9 / 10
