Fritz the Cat

Fritz the Cat

This movie is a mess. The structure is terrible, the pacing is haphazard and prone to irrelevant digressions, the animation quality is inconsistent, the "scorched earth" approach to satire blocks any discernible point of view.. then there's moments such as the kaleidoscopic crow frame right snapping its fingers along with Bo Diddley as a lovingly rendered, hand painted birdseye view of Harlem floats from an infinity distance to fill the frame, and you realize that Ralph Bakshi may not have figured out how to make a feature film yet, but he certainly had a cinematic imagination and a willingness to experiment. Fragments of great animated art like the above exist in the rubble among the weak political commentary and head shop toilet humor.
