The first foreigners in the wild Oregon, how you survive in unknown land without the help of a friend to overcome even more unknown problems.
I see this as an analogy to how the first cow represented America in the 1800's filled of opportunities when you could take your future from the ground. But highlighting how you build a friendship and society of two unknown people.
So that's how America was built.
