this could’ve been a play so easily. this could’ve been 30 minutes so easily. i’m convinced malcolm is actually sam levinson. it felt so inauthentic having a white writer write a black love story and made the most surface-level observations of what it’s like to be a black filmmaker and writer. while his words were coming out of black actors, it still felt so disconnected and calculated. it’s as though he was invited to a dinner party with poc filmmakers and was quickly jotting notes on what their complaints of critics were about. the cinematography was excellent and seeing zendaya and john david washington together was such a treat but the material did not do their acting chops justice.
