When I choose to see the good side of things, I'm not being naive. It is strategic and necessary. It's how I learned to survive through everything...
...The only thing I do know is that we have to be kind. Please, be kind. Especially when we don't know what's going on.
A ridiculously caotic & absurd yet wholesome & real experience, Daniels' Everything Everywhere All at Once is best described as a film equivalent to listening to Queens Bohemian Rhapsody. It is a rollercoaster of excitement, sympathy, joy, fear, sadness, confusion, empathetic pain, awe & many more emotions precisely placed in a wonderful & wacky package that doesn't sacrifice its beating heart in favor of being wild. I was very surprised by how much of an emotional impact this film had on me seeing how bizarre most of it is, with its messages of how to live a meaningful life & find joy in it, accepting other people no matter how they seem on the outside, dealing with our own frustrations & insecurities or "our inner evil" & learning how to talk with them, finding out that kindness is a far more effective "battle technique" than hostility, etc. that are all beautifully showcased & elevated by a pretty strong family dynamic & relationship that's at the core of the film.
Every single directial choice is absolutely fantastic and as mindblowing as the narrative is. I'm shocked at how unbelievable this film looks whit it's eye-catching colors & ridiculous scenery & how well it blends with the most innovative & outlandish action & martial art sequences I've seen in years with their crazy choreography, badass score, creative camera work & beastly energy that left my jaw drop every two seconds something happened & how well it companies a pretty emotional/dramatic storyline. I also love the more South Park like route the humor took with being weird, absurd & over the top that still maintains itself thanks to pretty intelligent writing & comedic timing that I think even the people who don't consider this type of humor funny can still respect the effort put into it.
And when it comes to the characters, I genuinely don't know who I loved the most since everyone did a stellar job as the film makes an opportunity for them to play the same character differently and have fun with it! Michelle Yeoh has reached God status after the range & comedic ability she showed in her performance as Evelyn Wang, Ke Huy Quan has probably the best comeback from a child actor ever & completely warmed my heart with his sweet voice & performance as Waymond Wang which character's dialogue broke me the most, Stephanie Hsu was fantastic as Joy & especially as Jobu Tupaki that strongly highlighted the nothing matters part of "nothing matters/everything matters" conflict and Jaime Lee Curtis still remains one of the most interesting & coolest people to exist.
In the end, Evelyn Wang's story is the one I will for sure find a new meaning or message with more viewings and is without a doubt the best usage of the multiverse concept with a story & characters that truly made me appreciate how grateful I am to be living the life I do, knowing the people I know & have a connection with my self that I've managed to improve greatly and become a more confident & better person. Daniel's outside-of-the-box thinking, creativity & imagination is nothing like I've ever seen before, and the way they used them to tell such a down-to-earth, meaningful & heartwarming family drama made for an overwhelming cinema experience I will remember fondly. It's everything a film should strike to be & truly was a spiritual awakening for me that had everything everywhere all at once ❤️
Bonus unrelated note: so since I am writing this review 2 weeks late, which is because of school work, traveling, personal life, etc ., & the Eurovision finale is happening tonight, I wish everyone who's country is competing the best chances of winning and to those who want to vote, vote 24 for Konstrakta - In corpore sano, a.k.a. the person who Eurovision doesn't deserve as much as the film industry doesn't deserve the Daniels, & make this the universe Eurovision Glibovac 2023 happens. Umetnica mora biti pobednica!
