Loved this. I loved how the story unfolded and got to where they were in X. So hypnotizing in a way because a lot of strange stuff is played really straight here but it all somehow works. The score and the style was really well done but the main draw was MIA GOTH. Such an excellent presence here and if the main reason the x trilogy exists is to be a mia goth vehicle then thank god. Also love how I’m sure the score transitioned into the x score during the credits. Love a full circle moment

Starts out slow and then ramps up the tension gradually until the shoe drops I was completely hooked by then and loved the second half but the first half was always on the verge of losing me. Maybe it’ll work better on a rewatch but it’s definitely solid regardless

Visuals are impeccable and the characters are vibrant although they’re acting out an extremely regular story for the visuals used. Not everything comes together but it ends pretty well so

Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon

While the slow and steady pacing of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night worked incredibly well and draws you in really easily this just kinda idles. The initial premise is cool and all but it doesn’t really do much with it other slowly drifting to it’s ending. Kinda just felt like it stopped when if ended. It’s like if Badlands was gender swapped and instead of a gun the weapon was unexplained mind control. works but not that well

So uniquely batshit in like the best way possible. Jokes hit the same, stakes feel real because it’s so crazy that people actually die in this. Luckily I posted this at a random time so nobody commented on this being my first watch—phew, really dodged that one didn’t I. Anyways I’m very excited for the sequel whenever I watch that

  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

    ★★★★½

Unbelievably weird for nearly the entirety of his runtime but it all works in the end somehow. It’s bewildering that it all works too because there is SO MUCH going on but that last thirty minutes is cinematic heaven. Definitely got a lot to think about since I’m kinda speechless but damn Spielberg. this was crazy

  • The Munsters

    The Munsters

    ★★★½

While it starts out a little slow its laidback nature and dad jokes started to get me. I really liked this but do not take my word for it and then get mad at me if you hate it cause it could not work at all for you. Worked for me though. I giggled many times. Sheri Moon Zombie’s acting is really fun here to me can’t lie

  • Mean Streets

    Mean Streets

Loved the energy here. The needle drops were great and the character work was awesome and was a pretty decent distraction from all the horrible things the characters were saying so—yeah I’m satisfied*

*gay as hell too which is a bonus (of course)

the thing about these stylized movies with surreal scripts is that you need to pick a choice about the world you present. is it all surrealistic at all times or it is glaringly realistic with surreal flourishes? this does neither.

For all it’s controversy nobody ever said this movie was an uneven, incomprehensible slog that would better advertised as a demo of some of the technical aspects used here rather an an actual movie narrative wise. The score is great…
