Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

    ★★★★★

Alfonso Cuarón is the best thing that could have ever happened to Harry Potter. The environments no longer feel like elaborate and beautifully crafted soundstages but rather lush and visually rich worlds full of texture and history. This is a once in a lifetime type of blockbuster. It feels risky and unique, something you don’t see too often in this space.

  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

    ★★★★

There is something so special about a children’s movie that decides to terrify and emotionally scar an entire generation of children. Giant spiders and snakes, a bleeding diary, and petrified victims galore…! The Chamber of Secrets entered the big leagues among legends such as Return to Oz, The Witches, and The Black Cauldron.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

    ★★★★

With no pun intended, this first entry of Harry Potter is purely magical. There’s a special warmth to this that no one other than the director of Stepmom could provide.

As a chronic hopeless idealist myself, this one cut a bit too deep and hit a little too close to home. A perfect example as to why I love the movies.

  • Godzilla

    Godzilla

    ★★★

The first half is really awkward, both in pacing and execution, but the second half really makes up for it.

  • Dune

    Dune

    ★★★★★

The cold and exuberant theatrics mixed with the sheer ridiculousness of how serious it takes itself kind of makes Dune a once in a generation event. It’s absurd.

  • Kiss the Girls

    Kiss the Girls

    ★★★

Less engaging and a lot harder to see than I remember. Was the glare on my tv that bad or was this really just that dark? Anyway, Ashley Judd is great.

A brilliant and grotesque gem of a movie! How I am only just now discovering it is completely beyond me.

I cannot put it into words, but the way Campion portrays the surrounding environments is so full of life and detail. It’s like nothing I have ever seen before. Incredible stuff.

  • Ghostbusters

    Ghostbusters

    ★★★

Another movie that does not deserve the hate it received. It’s not the original and it never tries to be. This is ultra silly, colorful, and completely harmless. The virtual nastiness is completely unwarranted. I would have preferred a sequel to this rather than the nostalgia bait legacy sequels we got after. Kristen Wiig you will always be famous!

  • Ghostbusters II

    Ghostbusters II

    ★★★

Vigo the Carpathian is one of my earliest memories. For my third birthday I received a tape of Ghostbusters II and it haunted me for most of my early childhood. I used to wake up terrified in the middle of the night thinking I could see Vigo walking across my room in the dark. 23 years later, he still makes me uneasy. That’s the power of cinema baby!

  • Ghostbusters

    Ghostbusters

    ★★★★

Ghostbusters is one of those movies that despite its setbacks it is hard to not have a great time watching it. With all of the cool effects, ghost designs, and charisma of the cast, it is easy to forget that the script is structurally pretty weak. Great stuff.

Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore are a match made in heaven.
