Zodiac

Zodiac ★★★★★

WOW. Zodiac is an epic, sprawling, balls out terrifying crime thriller drama spooky scary film movie from the man Daddy Fincher. I don't really know what I just wrote but I wrote it and know i'm not gonna get rid of it.

Zodiac is 2 1/2 hours long but the pacing on this thing is incredible. This film just didn't feel that long to me. I was so invested in all the interwoven lives and stories of the victims and the main characters and even the killer himself. All the different points of view really help sell this mystery and kept my very invested.

"I am not the Zodiac. And if I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you."

This movie's ending, and really everything about it, is so scary. I hate knowing that this is based off a true story, I hate that. That feeling that maybe, just maybe, that guy is still out there. And this film is why I feel that way. The constant fakeouts and the new evidence, and how everything makes sense but nothing does. The constant state of paranoia presented by all the outstanding performances in this film is so bone chilling.

"Before I kill you, I'm going to throw your baby out the window."

The kill scenes in this movie are some of the scariest I have ever seen. Especially in a non-horror film. There are all done in such a straightforward and obvious way, and none of them are too nonsensical. It's just gunshots and stabbings, which I think is what makes this movie scarier than Se7en. The thought, and even the fact, that this is a real guy.

"Bobby, you almost look disappointed."

These characters are SO good. All of them, from the Zodiac and his cryptic mysteriousness, to Paul Avery and his oddly flamboyant swagger and confidence, to Robert Graysmith and his dedication to something so big, and Dave Toschi with his animal crackers. And other stuff I guess...
A movie like this really, really needs good characters because most of the second half of this movie is all dialogue, but it it still as interesting as the first half.

FINAL VERDICT: I'm never going into a basement ever again.
