Encanto ★★★★

"The miracle is not some magic that you've got. The miracle is you."

Encanto is in the very best ways, a return to form for Disney. In fact, it's very easy to notice the similar story structure and style of this film compared to some Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.

But where Encanto stands out is in its music and ambition. Doing a large extended family as your main cast is a massive undertaking that works for the most part here. Setting the film in Colombia was also a visual treat as so much of the film's aesthetic is authentic and realized.

Once again, Lin-Manuel Miranda does not disappoint. His original songs for this film are a joy. An ode to Colombian music and perfect for this story. Probably taking a cue from sister company, Pixar and their recent release of Luca, Disney goes low stakes for its story. Keeping it centralized to this family and community but in doing so, we get a rich cultural tale about hard work, community, and trust in each other.

As Disney's 60th animated film, Encanto does well to reestablish the Disney format, and bring a fresh exciting world to life, and they've left plenty of room for a sequel.
