  When looking at Martin Scorsese's whole filmography, there are a couple films that really stand out for being against type. As I made my list in preparation for my watch-through, I couldn't help but feel dispassionate about watching Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. But my preconceived expectations were slashed right through the heart as I watched a beautiful film that proves Martin is not just that gangster movie guy.

  The Last Temptation of Christ 1988

  12 quirked up white boys + Jesus Christ himself wander around evangelizing. A deeply religious and personal project for Scorsese, I really respect the guy for persevering and getting this picture made despite all the setbacks and pushback from radical nut jobs.

  This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

  What better way to prep for M. Night Shyamalan’s newest film by watching one of his most beloved? Just kidding, The Happening seems to be universally hated and for good reason. Now I’m not sure if this airborne chemical that makes people commit suicide coming from the trees was the big twist, but the ubiquitousness of this film lead to me already knowing it was the trees all along.

  Babylon was the last movie I saw in theaters in 2022, and now it’s the first one I’ve seen in 2023. I decided this film deserved that latter distinction more than M3GAN. 

  After listening to the soundtrack in my car for a week straight and forcing all my friends to listen to it all New Year’s Eve, I can confirm this is the best score of the year. If this doesn’t win the Academy Award I will personally lead riots through the streets.
