Emma Seligman creates all of these vivid moments with perfect control using all the tools of film making. This film is so dialed in with an amazing central performance but the music, blocking, editing and cinematography is working together so well, ratcheting up the tension and making us laugh all at the same time. Terrific film making. Is this her first feature? How is that possible?
This is a sweet natured and hopeful movie with a jaunty Huckleberry Finn style river trip at the core of the film. Shia LaBeouf is a surprise here, still his surly self but with a likable and sympathetic core that centers the film. There is a nice bit of magical realism at the end which is genuinely touching.
