How can a movie based on a theme park attraction turn out to be one of the best modern adventure movies?

Pirates of the Caribbean is pure fun, with enough seriousness to get the story along. The sword fights have great choreography, the characters are likeable enough and the villains are damn threatening.

The CGI holds up extremely well and even in the final fight is using it in an awesome way.
