Princess Mononoke is the greatest animated movie I have seen and one of my favourite films of all time. But why?

Firstly, there's the sheer scope of the story. A lot of Ghibli movies are quite small-scale with low stakes which is great and I love films like My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service and Ponyo. However, it's great to see them produce a true epic in every sense from the stakes and runtime to the sense of location and…

Right, here we go then. I have about 1,300 films on my watchlist and Persona is the one that I wanted to see above all others. This is partly because I was intrigued by the synopsis and its reputation, partly because I want to watch more Bergman films but mostly because it had a massive influence on David Lynch, especially with Mulholland Drive which is my favourite film of all time.

So, did it live up to expectations? Of course…

The Straight Story is one of David Lynch's most 'normal' films but there are still plenty of aspects that make it easily recognisable as a Lynch feature. For example the exploration of small town America, quirky characters, unique humour, and occasional surreal moments such as the scene with the deer which feel similar to Twin Peaks or Blue Velvet. But, it's also a movie full of warmth and realism and something that has mass appeal which definitely can't be said…

I'm not convinced that The Lost Boys is actually a great film but it is very much my sort of thing hence the positive rating. I love films that combine horror and coming of age such as It or A Nightmare on Elm Street and when humour is thrown into the mix as well, it pretty much creates a dream combination for me. I also happen to enjoy movies that explore small town America, California, vampires, and dogs so this…

Had to celebrate David Lynch's birthday by watching one of his great masterpieces. Blue Velvet remains perfect and like the majority of Lynch's films, improves on each viewing. While it's less obvious than Mulholland Drive you can see the director playing around with dreams and nightmares here and the contrast and coexistence of the two. It's also a stunning portrait of small town America and the darkness that exists under a seemingly picturesque surface. The score is superb, Dennis Hopper…
