Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire ★★★★★

A pretty significant blind spot for me in the canon of the last 5 years or so, and it certainly did not disappoint. Sciamma has a great sense of rhythm that brings this blossoming relationship to life; each scene is perfectly plotted, whilst the slow and deliberate pacing engenders a beautiful connection between characters and audience. And my god the cinematography: the colours, composition, misè-en-scene — all perfect. The warm blue and green hues of the crashing waves and radiant sky, contrasting with the stark orange and reds of the flames, are astounding.
