Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ★★★★

Temple of Doom is the first black sheep of the Indiana Jones family which time has ended up being kinder to, but honestly I’ve always loved it. Raiders is the perfect blend of thrilling adventure and mythology, but the latter films always took something from that blend and extrapolated it to their own use, so Temple leans heavily into the mythic aspects of Indian culture and it stands out amongst the whole series as fairly unique because of it.

This is the darkest entry with something of a horror bent, and everything with the Thuggee cult is awesome. It gets genuinely frightening at parts. But there’s still plenty of thrilling action and adventure to be had.

Probably what does actually hold the film back more than the undue crap it got over its darker horror bent aspects is Willie and Short Round. I don’t even dislike them, but they do get annoying fairly quickly, and they’re nowhere near Sallah and Marion. But at the end of the day it’s Fords barbecue and it still tastes so damned awesome. Fords passion for the character is everlasting and shines through in every film. That he will play the role again at 79 years of age is an amazing fact in and of itself but so is the fact that it’s fully likely he’ll absolutely crush it yet again.
