What Time Is It There?

What Time Is It There? ★★★★½

Tsai's elegant yet haunting portrait of grief, loneliness, longing and denial where characters seek refuge and connection when time is at a standstill. What Time Is It There? is a film solely made up of the meditative moments of nothingness in daily existence - moments enveloped in melancholy that transcends the spiritual level of human connectivity. Tsai bends time and fills the empty spaces to put meaning into the meaningless and evoke emotions out of the mundane - a flawless and beautiful synthesis of the many qualities I admire in film. I didn't know how important Tsai's cinema would be to me upon my first viewing of this, but as time has passed, my adoration for Tsai's worlds has grown so much. Happy birthday Tsai, I love you <3
