“Always live without fear, for your fate is set and you cannot escape it!”
The Northman is director Robert Egger’s third film and easily the most general audience friendly yet. And this cast is stacked too and all of their performances from the leads to the supporters are fantastic. It’s obvious to me that Eggers is a huge fan of mythology, and the addition of Norse mythology is a great supplement and isn’t too metaphorical like The Lighthouse. The visuals are stunning, great cinematography, production and fight scenes tie well together. The story itself is pretty basic with some solid enough twists to keep it semi-fresh. The best part of the story in my eyes is the framing of the characters, especially the protagonist, really making you question is the movie’s “hero” really the good guy in this world?
