Kiki's Delivery Service

Kiki's Delivery Service ★★★½

You'd think they'd never seen a girl and a cat on a broom before.

Hi, I'm a little black cat. You may remember me from such experiences as "tearing up your carpet" and "aggressively meowing at 3 AM when you're trying to sleep." Like a tiny cat voiced by Phil Hartman, Kiki's Delivery Service is a film I would gladly describe as "adorable." I think I have been finding that the Studio Ghibli films I enjoy more are the ones that do not have a conventional challenge being given to its characters. In a film like this, My Neighbor Totoro, or Ocean Waves, there is no "antagonist" to really speak of. Here, we're watching a beautifully animated coming of age film for a teenage witch. The English voice dub was strong, I really liked the musical score, and there's a good balance of humor with actual challenges to Kiki's independence. It makes complete sense that for a studio that makes whimsy such an integral part of their catalog, witchcraft would be something they focus on. If you think witches are all fire and brimstone or whatever, you can watch this and have the cockles of your heart warmed. As some random side thoughts, it's very funny that one of the characters looks like Anthony Fantano, and this is the first time I have seen anyone, real or fictional, complaining that they can only eat pancakes. I think I need a Jiji plush.
