I'm the "movie score guy" for Now Playing Podcast (and in life). When I saw the new Mortal Kombat score was out I snatched it up, even though I hadn't seen the movie. Sadly, this score did little for me. They did remix the classic Mortal Kombat theme, but the new version reminds me of the “Alex F” theme from Beverly Hills Cop III, or Fall Out Boy's Ghostbusters 2016 song. They knew they had to have it but they just can't compete with the original.
The first half of the score's 80 minutes is fairly unimpressive background sounds that, I'm sure, enhance the movie but are nothing to listen to by themselves. The second half ramps up the rhythm a bit more (as, I presume, the action increases). The final four tracks (presumably the climactic fight) have more energy, and even bring in those classic bars from the classic theme a couple of times.
It's a callback to hopefully make us feel the nostalgia for the game and original movies, but that old score is not repurposed here a'la the James Bond theme used in every iteration of that character.
I still have hope that this video game adaptation can be good, but the score itself is a pass.
