An exercise in monotony, removed of tedium, aided by the relatively brisk pacing and well, borderline self-parody of Fincher's craft. In a film so ridiculous, mythologising and smug about everything, the rather disappointing ending dampens the efforts to elevate the middling material. I realise the thematic reasoning behind the decision and the practical rationale, but then why bother building up to it anyway? Gets a pass for the moments it does stand out, but I can't help but feel Fincher's…
Looks great for the type of horror film it is but it didn't get weird enough or [literally anything] enough. Waiting to see Derrickson finally hit a home run. Hawke's performance is great but he doesn't have enough material to work with honestly.
This film is great, y'all are just afraid to admit it. I raised my rating because I love this film so much. It has no flaws. NO FLAWS!
