Playtime: House of Wax (2006)
Fans of the classic 1950s Vincent Price horror film, rejoice! This is not a sequel but an entirely new re-imagining of haunted house terror. Elisha Cuthbert and Chad Michael Murphy add post-puberty sexiness to the familiar genre of teens in trouble. It’s a Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre mash-up set in aBeverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Dawson’s Creek world. That’s right, it’s a new classic. Director Jaume Collet-Serra has action movie panache plus a visionary sense of humor (see how he envisions the title) that Millennials correctly call “wicked.” And, yes, Paris Hilton’s Most Valuable Player performance turns out to be a scream.
