Slight misanthrope who watches way too many movies.
I love to watch Jodie Foster work, and she's on point here. But THE MAURITANIAN belongs to Tahar Rahim, who gives a superb performance. It's also one of the more enjoyable Cumberbatch roles that has nothing to do with sorcery.
And yes, it can be a hard watch. And an infuriating one. The film is never not compelling.
"Twenty years in Gotham...we know what promises are worth."
In the realm of superhero films, it is just good, not great. In the greater realm of action films, it ranks lower, the murk and bombast diluting any possible fun to be had from such fantasies. But the grimmer universe does make me curious about how other DC films will play out.
