A melancholy and overpowering Gothic fairytale so moving that it’s difficult to articulate. In giving Diana the happy ending she desperately deserved, Larraín makes his enormous empathy even more obvious. Every single element of this film: each performance, any track of the anxiety-inducing score, all of the gorgeous recreated costumes, the hazy cinematography, the seamless direction, and the sense of unease and tension cohere magically and with such cinematic force that it continues to blow me away and move me to tears. Not only my favorite of the year but one of my favorite films in years.
