Ma

Ma ★★★

Ma isn't exactly shaking the table. Much like Octavia Spencer's lead character, there's an overt sense of familiarity and purposeful nostalgia to the film's events and pacing that could either strike one as charmingly cozy and campy or completely cliche. Although the movie is (extremely) predictable, it's enjoyable, the ensemble is ridiculously stacked, and the third act veers into such insanity that it's hard not to love this. How refreshing to not only see Spencer playing completely against type but to witness Tate Taylor actually daring to do something interesting that's outside of his wheelhouse. God bless.
