Eggers is a good but not great director but also one of the few guys left who has, for better or worse, his own distinct style he's fully committed to, and seeing him work with this sort of budget and free reign was fascinating.
The film takes its source material seriously to an extent but never willing to go all in, the results have been accurately described by better critics than myself as utilizing the past as sci fi. The whole thing is equally alien and human.
Whether or not it works however is somewhat irrelevant, as it's all badass as hell.
