β¦.this is objectively not a great movie. But I'm watching this series from a fan's perspective, not that of a critic, and I can't dislike any movie that has Spock zooming around on little rocket boots. I have low standards for Star Trek. Sorry.
So, this one had a troubled production, and it shows. Everything feels a little cheaper, a little sillier, a little more forced. It reminds me of some of the weaker season 3 episodes of The Originalβ¦
Something I have really enjoyed is how vastly different in tone and focus every entry in this franchise has been so far. It keeps you on your toes. TMP was an ambitious stab at serious, allegorical sci-fi; Wrath of Khan was an action/adventure movie taken to operatic heights; Search for Spock was a bleak, phantasmagorical exploration of grief, the closest to the kind of space fantasy Star Wars indulges in, with elements of horror- Bones being literally possessed by Spock'sβ¦
a big, sincere, slightly goofy spiritual epic about the transcendent power of loveβ¦.the fact that this only has a 3.1 average while the utterly soulless and forgettableΒ star trek (2009) is at 3.6 is a crime!Β

a distinctly less cinematic outing than its predecessors- it feels more like an extended coda to Wrath of Khan than a movie in its own right. i can't really imagine this appealing to someone who isn't already invested in the characters and franchise.
still, it's Star Trek! so of course I loved it. the absence of Spock gives the rest of the crew a chance to shine, and, though I've never bought the idea that Shatner's a bad actor inβ¦
