  • Nope

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Jordan Peele's third best film, and its still a pretty good.

Eschewing straight horror with more of acifi angle, Nope has Peele's best visuals, even if they get repetitive in the up-in-the-sky vein.

Whatever Nope's shortcomings, it's not for lack of ambition. Some scenes tend to go on a beat too long, which adds up in sputtering the overall narrative. Some of the humor seems incongruous with what's going on onscreen, but that's easily forgiven considering a good portion of…

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

The entire production, especially Depp, seems like they're going through the motions. Very expensive CGI motions.

Only Javier Bardem looks like he's having a good time. You wish you were having as good a time as he was. You also wish you hadn't tipped Javier Bardem so much when he was a stripper because you didn't have enough to get back to your apartment.

    Orphan: First Kill

A middling but watchable prequel to the movie that really confused and then frustrated Roman Polanski and Woody Allen.

The final act makes it worth what you have to go through more or less.

    The Usual Suspects

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Even if you know the twist going in, the Usual Suspects is still an effective crime thriller.

The story holds up well enough to keep you compelled even as it gets deconstructed at the end.

The bluster of the tough talking Alpha males feel like parody at times but you know enough about them to care if they live or die.

Does some of it not hold up on a rewatch? Sure, but you still can't deny that initial rush.

    Almost anything but usual.

    The Suicide Squad

Not that it's any feat at all to be better than '16's limp Suicide Squad, but The Suicide Squad is infinitely better than David Ayer's junior high dance of a movie.

Embodying superhero movie tropes while making fun of them at the same time, James Gunn looks like he's having actual fun with an R-rating and without the corporate shackles of the no-stakes Marvel $$$-above-story guidelines.

Bloody and violent and the most fun you'll have all, um, August.

    Idris Elba…

    I Sell the Dead

A bite-sized horror comedy that thrives on the genuine comic chemistry between Dominic Monaghan and indie horror stalwart Larry Fessenden.

If you're into grave robbing, this is the horror comedy you've waited for so many people to die...for.

A flashback laden story about two grave robbers and the wacky bloody hi jinx that ensues.

Angus Schrimm plays a doctor(!) and Ron Perlman plays a priest(!) if you're wondering about this film's level of WTFuckery.

Played more for laughs than anything…
