I have fond memories of watching this in our primary school library, which we did often. I'm not sure if I think movie is a masterpiece or not because it isn't really one of those movies that I can be objective about. That being said, I love all the characters in this. Gene Wilder is the perfect Willy Wonka, and those spoilt kids are fun to watch. The songs are nice, and it's lovely that they used "Pure Imagination" as the main theme. It's got a whimsical quality to it. It's dated but I love it despite that.
