Non-2019 First Time Watches Ranked
Directors Ranked: Stanley Kubrick

Film #19 of my 5x5 Directors Challenge

I really don't know how to review this. Or specifically, how to type out why I liked this less than Kubrick's other two entries I've seen; Full Metal Jacket and The Shining.

Now, I can easily appreciate that this is one of the finest crafted films in history; the soundtrack, this little kind of futuristic world created, the camerawork of Kubrick, the performance of Malcolm McDowell, especially in the infamous Ludovico and Singin' In The Rain scenes. This is a masterclass. So why didn't I like this as much as those?

I still haven't quite figured it out. Maybe I waited too long to watch this? Maybe it's that I only liked the performance of McDowell and nobody else. I wouldn't think it was the ultra violence and the in-out, in-out as I am not easily offended, but fuck, maybe it was. The fact of the matter is I can't tell you exactly why I didn't like this as much as The Shining or Full Metal Jacket. I just didn't.

What I can definitively say is that Kubrick is most definitely one of the greatest directors of all-time and I have left his work unseen way too long.
