Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★½

Works like gangbusters as a work of ferocious, muscular historical course-correction, but it’s somehow even more successful as an old-school underworld drama, one refreshingly concerned with knotty ethical inquiries like: Who can you trust? How much can you really know a person? How can a man be a revolutionary, and also make time to be a husband and father? How do snitches struggle to live in the midst of the ghosts of people they’ve helped to put away, in one way or another? The kind of experience we hardly get anymore because most American films aren’t executed with this degree of patience, craft, and respect for an audience’s intelligence
