Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri ★★★★

In an effort to track down who raped and murdered her daughter, Mildred Hayes has three billboards put up outside her town of Ebbing, Missouri. They accuse the Sheriff of doing nothing to catch the killer. This causes a largely adverse, and diverse, reaction amongst the town, not least of all the sheriff's deputy, especially the idiotic, hot-headed Jason Dixon.

It’s dark, it’s funny, it’s brutal, it’s dramatic, it’s thoroughly entertaining and even blood-boiling. I say blood-boiling because what happens really makes me angry, I didn’t feel that type of anger since I watched Judas And The Black Messiah. I love it when a movie does that because it means that it’s doing a great job at drawing you in emotionally, which is what it’s trying to do. The movie is balanced perfectly, an intense drama that’s heavy for it’s subject matter, and at the same time, a dark comedy. It utilises it’s comedic aspects in a way that feels so natural and never forced.

Mild spoilers:
Frances McDormand is superb as a divorced, badass mom that can kick whoever’s butt she wants. And yes she is tough and strong but she’s also incredibly sensible and an amazing person, we can see that on three separate occasions: one at the beginning when she flips that bug over, then when she’s starts crying after Dixon unexpectedly jumps out the window of the burning police station and then at the very end. Anyway what I’m trying to say is that she’s a good person, and that Frances deserved the Oscar. Sam Rockwell’s character is a bit more complicated, he’s extremely unlikable and it takes a very long time for him to change but he does, and for the better.

The screenplay is one of the best parts of the movie, it’s fast paced, it’s fun, it’s extremely realistic, it’s just really great. The direction is also really great and underrated. Brilliant editing and cinematography too.

Overall this movie is just trying to tell you that you CAN change for good, and that you always have to be a GOOD PERSON. Fantastic watch, highly recommend it!
