BlackBerry

BlackBerry ★★★★

BlackBerry exceeds my expectations by miles. It's a funny, intense and stylish take on the rise and fall of the Blackberry, and the price of fame and success.

I'm not familiar with the history of Blackberry, so this messy story about power, deceit and integrity truly takes me by surprise. Structurally it may not break the genre conventions, but director Matt Johnson for sure makes it up with his unique style and great mockumentary techniques. It's an immersive experience that connects the audience with every single character, and ends in the best way possible. No wonder this was entered into Berlinale's main competition.

Acting wise this is superb too. Glenn Howerton is the standout of the ensemble, playing a highly flawed role with impressive menace and believability. Jay Baruchel, on the other hand, acted on the other end of the spectrum with an equally transformative performance. Matt Johnson himself as the comic relief is the cherry on top. Highly recommended.
