A movie I desperately wanted to fall in love with, but I couldn’t quite get there.
Its life-affirming story is at odds with its story construction (why aren’t all these souls suitable for life in this movie that’s supposedly about universal kindness and finding beauty in all things?) and it never quite reaches the profundity it strives for, but damnit, that score and those performances really worked on me. Winston Duke is a star, no question!
Can someone please explain to me what happened (or what was supposed to happen) in this movie?
The Last Thing He Wanted feels like someone cut out 45 minutes of it at the last second before its premiere at Sundance. It’s all over the place, and a serious disservice to Anne Hathaway who is clearly trying her best.
