Due to Godzilla vs. Kong releasing soon, I thought it’d be best to watch the movies of that franchise I hadn’t seen! I saw the first Godzilla a few years ago and my opinions on that film are similar to the ones I have about this film!
This movie was obviously meant for the big screen! If I would’ve seen this at the cinema I probably would’ve been blown away! It’s jaw droppingly stunning with ridiculously fantastic VFX! And I do think that it’s the movie’s strongest asset! There are so many amazing and gorgeous shots that will remain in my head for a long time because they simply blew my mind! The cast do a great job but I feel some of their characters were way too annoying! I hate to say it but I don’t think Tom Hiddleston is much of a leading man! I think he’s a good actor but he was one of the least interesting things about the film I regret to say! I love Brie Larson and she is pretty great here, she doesn’t do a whole lot, but the things she does do are good! Samuel L. Jackson’s character was so annoying! And I love Samuel L. Jackson, but his character was so damn irritating! John Goodman basically plays himself which is fine! And John C. Reilly plays such a strange character! I genuinely don’t have my mind made up about him! Kong himself is extraordinary! The film is always at it’s best whenever he’s around! And all the other creatures were an absolute treat! I also feel that the film’s shift in tone is a tad distracting, I wasn’t really a fan of the comedy! But the action sequences are so good!
Overall, Kong: Skull Island screams Hollywood blockbuster and I wish I’d of had the chance to see it on the big screen because I feel that’s how it should be seen! It’s visuals are larger than life and they are the thing that keeps the movie from falling apart! All in all though, it can be quite thrilling!
