I went in to this expecting to see a different side to the mcu, one with more inventive action and a more polished style than what these films usually give. I guess there is at least one really cool fight and a couple of interesting visual choices. But mostly this felt really bland and over stylised. This blandness and overstylisation is very apparent in the new setting which should have been a nice change from what we usually get from the mcu but it wasn't, there is almost nothing about how it's shot that sets it apart from what they usually give us.
And then there is the action. The impossible camera moves, the pretty weak corechography, and over use of cgi made the fights feel really artificial and weightless. In other words the action was unexciting, which is the last thing you want when you have an action movie with a rather weak plot.
The story is well paced and some of the jokes are funny, but that's as much compliments I will give to the writing. The characters aren't that interesting and when they did have the opportunity to make the story a lot more compelling they chose not to do that for the sake of being a marvel movie. And that marvel movie climax is it just throws the few new things we got away for the sake of things we have seen before.
