Portrait of a Lady on Fire. 2019. Directed by Celine Sciamma.
This is a masterpiece among narrative feature length lesbian films. Adele Haenel (Heloise) and Noemie Merlant (Marianne) have a relationship based on truth and observation. Their affinity for each other came from acknowledging in a very short time that they had love for each other. Once they knew, they did not waste time because they had the perfect conditions to study each other and love each other. It may have been impossible for these women to have had a lesbian relationship otherwise. So, the few days they had were eternal and everlasting poetic moments they never forgot.
This is a film that I will never forget because I saw it with Allison a few months before we were plunged into a pandemic. Then, it became a source inspiration and meditation on love and harmony for us as we relied on the transcendental power of cinema to pass time during the COVID-19 pandemic.
