Super tight storytelling (no fat on this bad boy); immersive and terrifying, with action scenes that still rivet you four decades later. I love how much is left unexplained; rather than cram a bunch of lore down the audience’s throat, Miller allows it to seep through organically, or else remain an intriguing but un-excavated substratum. My favorite of the series.

North by Northwest 1959
I had the misfortune of first watching this for a class in 10th grade, which led me to dismiss it as boring and corny. North by Northwest is anything but, obviously. Also depressing as hell to see what this country has lost in the trains department.

Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds With Shane MacGowan 2020
A terribly disappointing and lazy film. Turns the story of one of the most interesting bands in the world into ‘Plastic Paddy’ kitsch, complete with cutesy animations. Leans heavily on worshipful celebrity interviews, and concludes with a truly execrable 60th birthday bash in which a wheelchair-bound, vacant-eyed MacGowan receives self-satisfied tributes from people like Bono and Johnny Depp.
Ekes out 2 stars because The Pogues still rule.
