Naughty aka Juli Norwood’s review published on Letterboxd:
Extended Directors Cut! Having seen every version of this masterclass of horror cinema the one thing that continues to impress me isn't how truly horrifying the film is.. and it IS! But that he was able to slip in some of the most obvious non mainstream film sequences that were as nasty as they were disturbing and more befitting a grindhouse feature! Then he had the audacity to peddle it to mainstream audiences no less, the fact he wasn't hung by his thumbs upon its release is confounding! And how it escaped the infamous X-rating is beyond me! You have to remember we're talking about a film made in the 1970s for petes sake!
Seriously lets face it the film could have easily devolved into an out and out complete and utter B-grade schlockfest if it hadn't been for director William Friedkin and a cast of heavyweights including Max von Sydow, Ellen Burstyn, Lee J. Cobb and Jason Miller that kept the film grounded!
If instant gratification is your bag then look elsewhere for this is a slow burner where the horror aspects of the film must be earned! The film deals with numerous issues such as a mother's love, a crisis of mind, body and spirit!
Immortalized by pop culture until the end of days due to a plethora of iconic moments and visuals!
Happy Halloween :-)
