Nas’s review published on Letterboxd:
The first hour led me to believe that this would be a solid entry in the MCU but the latter half really killed my enjoyment in the movie.
The movie provided some good action for the MCU but when it comes to story, I really couldn’t care less. The movie is bloated with too many characters so there wasn’t time with enough of them for me to care or be invested in anyone’s story (with the exception of Xialing).
Simu Liu is a weak lead and I can’t stand Awkafina so there wasn’t any way I was invested in the main characters’ story. The Mandarin had potential to be a good character but his time was limited and acted more of an obstacle in the story than an actual realized character.
The movie also annoyed me with its poor set up of the world that was purposefully made weak to leave room for a sequel to operate. The teases at the end did nothing for me but say “Shang Chi will be in another Marvel movie”, not “this is the path of the character we’re taking and here’s what you can be excited for” like other post credits scenes have done.
